About Farming the future

Farming the Future is an international campaign, devised jointly by Dutch public and private sector stakeholders. We believe that by working together across sectors and borders we can  create a sustainable food system for people, planet and prosperity.

A fair and just food system...

As a renowned leader in agriculture and food, the Netherlands has a key role to play in facilitating and accelerating the global transition towards a sustainable agricultural system. Farming, horticulture and fisheries are innovative sectors in the Netherlands and contribute significantly to the prosperity of our country. We are keen to share our knowledge and experience to support countries around the world achieve food security and generate economic opportunity.

Our challenge

To achieve food security, we need to ensure enough supply of high-quality and nutritious food for everyone, around the world. However, the current food system is a threat to both people and our planet. Therefore, we need to rethink the way we produce our food. With the power of innovation and collaboration, we can find effective ways to raise sustainable food supply, while lowering the negative impact on nature and biodiversity.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Netherlands has defined important objectives for 2030 - to contribute to the world's efforts in alleviating hunger and malnutrition by:

  • increasing production of high quality and nutritious food (SDG 2)
  • doubling the productivity of eight million farmers worldwide (SDG 8)
  • bringing eight million hectares of land under sustainable management (SDG15)
  • and promoting responsible use of raw materials and consumption (SDG 12)
