Why partner up?

Fruit and berry production is a process. It starts with choosing the right varieties of clean planting materials. Then the crop needs to be nursed, grown and yielded. After harvest, the fruits and berries must be cooled down and stored under the right conditions. After the product is packed, the product should reach the consumers in top quality. Holland House of Fruits supplies all the different steps of the production process.

Erwin Hillebrand is the third generation producing apple and pear trees and rootstocks in the Flevo polder (a province in the Netherlands). The specialization is more and more on many different varieties of rootstocks. In this way fruit trees can be more resistant against diseases or more tolerant against heat. The apple and pear rootstocks are worldwide known in the fruit production industry because they are free of viruses controlled by the NAK-tuinbouw. The rootstocks are being exported worldwide and also to Turkey, but depending on the changing Turkish policies the rootstocks can be exported or not. Therefore Hillebrand joins this PIB programme to try to get every year access to the Turkish market. The clients of Hillebrand are usually the same clients as for berry plants and therefore Hillebrand is a complementary partner in this Dutch cluster to accomplish smoothening the path for export of planting materials to Turkey.

Rapo

The Roosendaalse Aardbei Planten Onderneming (Rapo B.V.) is a nursery producing strawberry & asparagus plants. Rapo was founded in 1975 and started to sell the certified plants throughout the European market but also to overseas destinations. In 2006, Rapo and three other leading Dutch nurseries started a collaboration with the strawberry breeding department of the University of Wageningen which was privatized, and continued under the name Fresh Forward. Fresh Forward is one of the two Dutch leaders in breeding new varieties which are tastier, more disease resistant and high yielding. The varieties are extensively tested in terms of growing conditions, fertilization and cultivation methods, and are prepared for the market.

Ridder works to help farmers and growers to transition successfully to more efficient and, above all, more sustainable production methods. The shift towards protected cultivation plays a key role in this: within a controlled greenhouse environment, crops can be grown with minimal use of water and fertilizers, regardless of the external weather conditions.
